Make good, in public.

When we err, we correct in public. Make Good is the house name for corrections policy — visible lines on the affected piece, logged on the bench, and propagated to the evening ingot when the noon pour already shipped.

We do not silently rewrite paragraphs, swap photographs without note, or remove material without an archive line except when legally required — and then we say so.

Correction types

Clarification — context added without changing the factual core. Marked with a Clarification line and timestamp.

Correction — a factual error fixed. The original error is summarised in the line; the corrected text stands in body. Cast timestamp of correction is always SGT.

Update — new verified information on a developing story. Distinct from correction when the original was accurate at publication time.

Retraction — the piece or a material claim is withdrawn. Rare. Retraction lines explain what failed in the quench and what was removed.

Timing

Corrections publish as soon as verified — they do not wait for the next cast if the error is substantive. Minor typographical fixes may batch to the evening ingot with a note. Photograph credit errors are treated as substantive and fixed immediately.

The desk editor initials every Make Good line before upload. Sub-editors retain corrected proofs for internal archive.

How to report an error

Email [email protected] with the URL, cast timestamp, and the claimed error. We respond during desk hours Mon–Fri 10:00–22:00 SGT and Sunday 12:00–18:00 SGT. Phone +65 6236 7041 for urgent legal notices only.

We do not require a particular form — plain email is sufficient. Include on-the-record sources where possible so the quench can restart quickly.

Relationship to the quench

Make Good is step six's counterpart after release. A correction re-opens bench proof for the affected paragraphs; major retractions trigger a hearth review logged in the Sunday file.

Readers comparing casts should look for Make Good lines at the top of updated pieces — not buried in footers.

Wording standards

Make Good lines use plain English: what was wrong, what is correct, when the fix published (SGT). We name the error type — Clarification, Correction, Update, Retraction — in the line prefix. We do not use euphemisms like "stealth edit" or "refresh".

When a headline changes, the line states the prior headline in quotation marks. When a photograph is replaced, the line names credit changes. When a dateline shifts, the line explains whether the event time was wrong or our receipt time was misstated.

Archive behaviour

Corrected HTML remains online with the Make Good line visible. We do not maintain a separate secret version for the public site. Internal proofs retain markup showing the diff for staff training.

Search engines may recrawl corrected pages; we do not use robots tricks to hide corrections. If law requires removal, a Retraction line explains the legal basis without repeating harmful content.

Partner corrections

When a licensed partner frame requires credit correction, we fix both caption and internal licence log the same day. Partner disputes go through [email protected] with the cast timestamp — not through social media threads.

Readers who spot duplicate credit lines across outlets should still tell us — we correct our copy regardless of partner timing.

Make Good is a reader-facing promise: if we would not say it on the stoop, we do not leave it uncorrected on the site.
